FRIDAY WORKSHOPS

1 p.m.

Monroe County Sheriff’s – CSI – collecting evidence Vs. TV.

2 p.m.

Monroe County Sheriff’s – Detectives – working with evidence.

Workshop Description:

When you write about investigating a crime scene, do you want to get the details correct? Too many times, the small details trip a writer up. And a knowledgeable reader will notice the mistake. For instance, Is that thing that holds the bullets in a semi-automatic handgun called a “clip” or a “magazine”? It is called a magazine. Does your suspect have a “safety” on his or her gun? Not if it is a revolver! They don’t have safeties. When a suspect asks for an attorney, what can you do and what can’t you do? Can you still ask questions about the crime? No, not if you want to use the information to make the case.

Wouldn’t it be handy to have a real detective you could call to ask these things? Here is your chance to see and speak with a real detective and CSI in action as they investigate the scene of a crime.

· What is a crime scene? How do you determine the boundaries?
· How do you document a crime scene?
· What kind of surfaces hold fingerprints and which don’t?
· How do you lift fingerprints from different surfaces?
· How is evidence packaged?
· Who enters a crime scene and who doesn’t?
· How do you question witnesses, suspects and victims?
· What evidence do you need to make an arrest?
· When questioning a suspect, what are the ground rules?

Two veteran Monroe County Sheriff’s Office detectives – Major Crimes Detective Manny Cuervo and Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) John Underwood will show you the answers to these questions and more as they set up a typical scene and investigate it while you watch. And they will be happy to answer your questions as they work with the tools of their trade, and figure out who committed the crime.
